GROWTH VARIANT #43: North 44:52:02 by West 92:46:37. Two young birch trees grow in a open patch of prairie grass above the St Croix River in Afton State Park. I go there as often as I can. I hang a hammock between the two trees that are just barely strong enough to support me, and I read and doze and watch clouds pass. Directions from Gallery: 1rst Avenue south to 6th street, 6th street east to Interstate 94, Interstate 94 east to Hwy. 95, Hwy. 95 south to Afton, Hwy. 21 from Afton to entrance to Afton State Park (parking permit required), continue past park entrance building to main parking area, take trail down steep ridge and across Trout Brook, follow signs to Backpack Camping Area. Two birches are located just below campsite #14. RECOMMENDED PERFORMANCE: Lay in hammock. Watch black ants crawling up and down the white birch trunk. Blink each time an ant crosses a black spot on the birch bark. Try to figure out what the ants are up to in this birch tree. Try to figure out if there is something in it for the birch tree too. Try to figure out how you could genetically improve the birches or the ants to make all this easier to understand. Try to remember what you came there to do in the first place. Nap.
