GROWTH VARIANT #4: North 47:11:54 by West 91:22:38. A single birch tree grows on the pebble beach of a small cove of Lake Superior just below Split Rock Lighthouse. Violent storms change the beach each season but the tree has grown there for several decades now. The first time I saw it I was taken by the way the paper white trunk grew straight out of the dark gray pebble beach. There was not any other growing thing near it. A few years later storms washed away so much of the beach that 3 vertical feet of the tree's roots were exposed, leaving the white trunk standing in the air on top of a web of raw looking roots The next time I visited the tree had begun to grow paper white bark on its roots. DIRECTIONS FROM GALLERY: 1rst Avenue south to 6th street, East on 6th to Hennepin, North on Hennepin to Washington, East on Washington to Interstate 35, North on I-35 to Duluth, 61 north out of Duluth to entrance to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park (vehicle permit required), past park headquarters take right fork to first parking lot on left side of road. From parking lot take short trail across Day Hill Trail to lake shore. RECOMMENDED PERFORMANCE: Stand nearby and study how the white tree comes up out of the dark beach stones. Think about the roots under the beach holding it in place. Then sit leaning against the trunk, feeling the shape of the tree with your back as you stare out across the water for a long time.
