GROWTH VARIANT #36: North 45:00:01 by West 93:14:49. A good place to get birch veneer in the Twin Cities area is Youngblood Lumber Company, at 1335 Central Avenue NE in Minneapolis. The birch veneer is kept on the 2nd floor of a dark and drafty rambling wooden building. There is plenty of room to spread several sheets out to allow for the detailed study the individual grain patterns. Because there is generally nobody else around you can leisurely contemplate individual pieces of veneer before making your selection. DIRECTIONS FROM GALLERY: 1rst Avenue south to 6th street, East on 6th to Hennepin, north on Hennepin across Mississippi to Central, left on Central. Lumberyard is on right side of Central just across Broadway. RECOMMENDED PERFORMANCE: Wander around the wood racks of the lumberyard until you find a piece of veneer that interests you. Buy it. Take it home. Think about how the wood was formed, timbered, milled, and manufactured. Look at the grain a lot. Find the spot in the grain that is most beautiful. Genetically engineer a strain of birch trees to make grain that looks just like that one most beautiful spot.
